Abstract

The human being’s physical and psychological well-being reaches its optimal level when

initially all its basic needs are answered. One of the basic needs principles is the essential feeding

for one’s survival. However, this basic need can be jeopardized when certain difficulties are

encountered like the ones found in large catastrophes. In order to answer this basic need, a

portable kitchen’s virtual prototype was developed, in order to support the population during the

harsh circumstances that catastrophes provoke, as well as ease the task for the supporting agents,

to respond to the most essential needs at the moment, and find the fastest route back to regularity.

To achieve the most appropriate concept, an extensive research was made in the accessible media,

as well as field research with the interview’s backup, in a way that the portable kitchen could

respond to the actual needs felt in a catastrophe situation.

By the Portuguese Red Cross, was pointed out the lack of a structure that could answer, in a

practical way, to the feeding basic need in an emergency or catastrophe situation. All of the

mobilization process will be accounted for, since the exact moment when people become aware of

the disaster, throughout the mobilization and field implantation, pointing out the most important

factors in those situations.

The project’s main engine lives within the challenge to help those who are in the most need,

by creating a structure for food preparation, during the temporary existence of homeless

populations, catastrophe victims, providing the most elementary goods such as feeding and

physical well-being.
